DOROTHÉE MEYER (www.motivegallery.nl)
1973, Keulen (Duitsland), fotograaf

Dorothée Meyer (Cologne, 1973) studied photography at the Koninklijke Academie in The Hague and at Post–St. Joost in Breda. Her photos are taken as series, as collections, with a premeditated idea. Dorothée Meyer’s photos were exhibited a.o. at Stadsgalerij Heerlen, Huis Marseille and Foam in Amsterdam. The exhibition The Perpetual summer - earlier this season at Motive Gallery - featured the series Psychiatrische klinieken in Nederland. The Dutch have very little landscape at their disposal. Open space is limited. The most natural landscape in the Netherlands is, simultaneously, the most artificial. With the series Nederlandse bergen, Dorothée Meyer wants to give an image of the Netherlands as a natural landscape. She deliberately attempted a paradox when she decided to photograph Dutch mountains. Views in a land without actual peaks. The photos show natural areas, a non–cultivated vastness. A landscape that only exists by the grace of the camera. A matter of framing, of a carefully chosen camera-position. Elements like litter bins, roads and high-tension poles have been left outside the image. It was also out of a documentary interest that Dorothée Meyer made this series. As an archive for later times, to already preserve landscapes that stand a chance of disappearing. Even though the photos show quite factual registrations of elevated areas in a low–lying country, the conception of the series reveals a romantic touch. A quest for something that is not really there. A desire for elevation that cannot be redeemed.
